Zelensky and European leaders agreed on a common position on negotiations with Russia

Ukraine should begin any negotiations with Russia based on the current front line, but at the same time maintain the strongest possible position — both before and after a possible cessation of hostilities.
This is stated in a joint statement by President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of European states.
“We fully support the position of US President Donald Trump on the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The current contact line should become the basis for the start of negotiations. We firmly believe that internationally recognized borders cannot be changed by force,” the document states.
European leaders have noted that Russia continues to use delaying tactics while Ukraine remains the only party consistently seeking peace, and that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s actions show he is only willing to escalate further.
“We understand: Ukraine must be in the strongest negotiating position — before, during, and after any ceasefire. It is necessary to continue economic and sanctions pressure on Russia and its defense industry until the Kremlin is forced to choose peace,” the statement said.
In addition, Ukraine’s allies are developing mechanisms to use frozen Russian assets to benefit Kyiv.
It is expected that this week, leaders of states will meet at a meeting of the European Council and in the “Coalition of the Determined” format to agree on further steps to support Ukraine and implement new initiatives.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump on the evening of October 16 revealed the first details of his telephone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The American leader stressed that the conversation was productive. During it , both leaders agreed to organize a meeting in Budapest in the near future .
In addition, US President Donald Trump considers a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to be quite real and does not rule out that it could take place soon.
