Zelensky and Fico held telephone talks: key points

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico. During the talks, the parties discussed bilateral relations, Ukraine’s European integration, and agreed on further contacts.

During the conversation, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the need to strengthen relations between Ukraine and Slovakia. According to him, both states are interested in developing cooperation.
“We need to have strong relations between our states, and we are both interested in this,” Zelensky said .
The parties paid special attention to the issue of Ukraine’s European integration. The Prime Minister of Slovakia confirmed his support for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and expressed his readiness to share Slovakia’s experience of integration.
The President of Ukraine also announced that he had invited Robert Fico to Kyiv and received an invitation to visit Bratislava. In addition, the parties discussed the possibility of a personal meeting in the near future.
“I invited the Prime Minister to visit Kyiv and thanked him for his invitation to come to Bratislava. We also discussed the possibility of meeting in person in the near future. Our teams will work on the schedule,” Zelenskyy noted.
Robert Fico also released his version of the negotiations. He stated that despite different views on certain issues, Bratislava and Kyiv have a common interest in maintaining good relations.
“Despite the fact that we have different views on some issues, we have a common interest in good and friendly relations between the Slovak Republic and Ukraine,” Fico said.
The Prime Minister of Slovakia also confirmed support for Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
“I confirmed that Slovakia supports Ukraine’s ambitions to join the EU, as Slovakia wants Ukraine to be a stable and democratic country as our neighbor,” he said.
According to Fico, the parties agreed to hold a short meeting on May 4 in Yerevan during the European Political Community summit.
The Slovak Prime Minister also stated that a peaceful resolution of the war is impossible without the participation of Ukraine.
“I also emphasized that no peace agreement in the military conflict with the Russian Federation is possible without the consent of the Ukrainian side,” Fico said.

Later, Slovak Prime Minister RobertFico said that the country could block a 90 billion euro European Union loan for Ukraine . According to him, Slovakia is ready to adopt Hungary’s position in the event of a change of government in that country after the elections.
