Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump are preparing to meet on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada. The dialogue between the leaders is expected to take place in the format of a bilateral meeting outside the official part of the forum.
This is reported by Axios .
According to White House sources, Trump is planning meetings not only with Zelensky, but also with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. This will be the first personal conversation between the Ukrainian and American leaders since their brief contact in April during the funeral of Pope Francis.
Zelensky and Trump are expected to discuss the current phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the extent of US support, and Washington’s role in the global coalition against Russian aggression.
The 51st G7 summit is taking place from Sunday to Tuesday in the remote resort town of Kananaskis, in Canada’s western Alberta province. The location previously hosted the G8 summit in 2002 and is known for its privacy and remoteness.
The G7 includes the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In addition to the main participants, representatives of the European Union have been invited to the summit, as well as other leaders invited by the summit’s host, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
This year’s summit marked the debut of:
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz,
- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer,
- Japan premiere of Shigeru Ishiba.
The G7 summit is taking place against the backdrop of a number of global crises:
- war between Israel and Iran,
- a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine,
- escalating disputes between the US and its allies over policy in the Gaza Strip and trade tariffs.
Interestingly, Donald Trump’s visit to Canada comes against the backdrop of his loud statements about the “possible annexation” of the northern neighbor and repeated trade conflicts. Journalists recalled that in the past the American president has dragged Canada into a tariff war and criticized its foreign policy.
It was previously reported that representatives of the President’s Office hope to organize a meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and the United States – Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump – on the sidelines of the G7 summit on June 15-17.
Recall, Volodymyr Zelenskyy last met with Donald Trump on April 26 in Rome, where both leaders are attending the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis.
As is known, the United States opposes the inclusion of a clause on “further support” for Ukraine in the joint statement following the meeting of the G7 finance ministers.
