Zelenskyy and Trump Will Discuss Arms Suspension in Upcoming Phone Call: Date Announced
Reuters
A phone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump is scheduled for Friday. The leaders are expected to discuss the recent suspension of some US military aid to Ukraine.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the details of the negotiations.
According to insider information, the Ukrainian side also plans to raise the issue of possible new weapons purchase contracts. The exact time of the conversation may still change. Both the White House and the Office of the President of Ukraine have refrained from commenting on the planned dialogue.
The situation escalated after Ukraine summoned a high-ranking American diplomat in response to the US Department of Defense’s unexpected decision to suspend the supply of several modern weapons systems.
This occurred amid an escalation of hostilities — in particular, the latest large-scale air attack by the Russian Federation, the most powerful since the start of the full-scale war. Some of the weapons already prepared for transfer remain in warehouses in Poland.
Kyiv is pushing to acquire 10 Patriot batteries to protect against Russian missiles and drones — worth about $15 billion. Zelenskyy spoke about this during last week’s NATO summit, which Trump described as a “very nice” meeting.
The US President then stated that he might consider selling Patriots to Ukraine, although he emphasized the shortage of such systems in the US.
As reported, after reports of the suspension of the supply of part of military aid to Ukraine, the Pentagon assures that Washington continues to work on solutions.
It should be noted that the US State Department assured that they did not stop all arms supplies to Ukraine, and the Pentagon’s decision made the day before is just one situation.
By the way, the decision of the US Department of Defense to stop sending certain types of weapons to Ukraine without warning came as a surprise not only to American diplomats but also to congressmen, who usually have access to such information.
