Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that more active U.S. engagement could help resume full-fledged negotiations with Russia to end the war.
He said this in an interview with CNN.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine has already submitted new proposals for the peace process to Washington. He believes that negotiations can be resumed with maximum US involvement and increased pressure on Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
“We need greater American participation in the peace process. I’m grateful to President Trump’s team for wanting to continue. Putin doesn’t want to stop this war now, and there’s not enough pressure on him right now,” the president said.
At the same time, Zelensky once again rejected the possibility of withdrawing Ukrainian troops from Donbas as a condition for ending the war.
The head of state emphasized that reliable security guarantees remain a key issue for Ukraine. He stated that Kyiv must be assured that after the cessation of hostilities, Russia will not use the pause to prepare for a new large-scale offensive.
“The main question is why he doesn’t come again with an extra million or two after a long pause. Will he come again to occupy us?” Zelenskyy noted.
