Zelenskyy and Trump Reconnect: First Glimpse into a High-Stakes Call

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described his phone call with US President Donald Trump as meaningful and productive, highlighting discussions on ending the war and boosting defense cooperation between the two countries.

The press service of the President of Ukraine reported on the outcome of the call.

“The key issue, of course, is ending the war. We are grateful to the U.S. President for his efforts toward a just and lasting peace. The killing must be stopped as soon as possible, and we fully support that,” Zelenskyy said in his address.

The two leaders coordinated the positions of Ukraine and the United States and exchanged assessments of the situation on the front lines. Zelenskyy noted that Trump was briefed on the intensification of Russian missile attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

The conversation also addressed sanctions against Russia. According to Zelenskyy, the Russian economy continues to weaken, and Moscow is closely watching Trump’s actions, which could decisively shift the course of events.

Defense support from European allies was also discussed. Zelenskyy emphasized that the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have already committed over $1 billion for the purchase of U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine.

A separate topic of discussion was the upcoming bilateral agreement between Ukraine and the United States on unmanned aerial systems. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has already prepared a draft proposal and is ready for talks.

“This could be one of the strongest deals yet. Thank you to every American heart that supports our fight to defend lives. Thank you, President Trump!” Zelenskyy concluded.

The day before, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to significantly increase tariffs on imports from India due to its cooperation with Russia in the energy sector.

By the way, US President Donald Trump said that he is no longer interested in meeting with Russian dictator Putin.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced a new deadline for Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine. The new ultimatum was 10–12 days.

Recall, on July 28, US President Donald Trump said that he plans to shorten the deadline for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine. The day before, the Donald Trump administration announced that it would impose secondary sanctions and tariffs against Russia if a ceasefire is not achieved in Ukraine within 50 days.
