Zelensky is considering firing Syrsky.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is considering the resignation of Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyy and plans to meet with commanders this weekend to evaluate potential candidates to replace him.
The Financial Times reports this, citing sources.
According to the publication, the head of state wants to personally hear assessments of the situation on the front and ensure that a possible change in leadership will not affect the stability of defense along the 1,200-kilometer front line.
The FT notes that one of the factors that pushed the president to take this step was the protests that, following the resignation of Mikhail Fedorov, have increasingly been directed against Syrsky personally.
Zelenskyy previously stated that he had no plans to dismiss the commander-in-chief, and also noted that he had to act as a mediator between Syrsky and Fedorov during their conflict.
As reported, on Thursday, July 16, protests in support of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov took place in several Ukrainian cities . People took to the streets following the decision to dismiss him, calling on the authorities to reconsider the personnel changes.
As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy decided to dismiss Mykhailo Fedorov from his post as Minister of Defense due to a long-running conflict with the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyy.
It should be noted that the new Minister of Defense, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the head of the SBU will not be appointed until the next meeting of the Verkhovna Rada , which is scheduled for August 18.
