Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the eve of a key meeting in Washington that he is ready for an “acceptable compromise” in the peace process. He is talking about the possibility of agreements that would be based on the current front line, without concessions to the territories that remain under Ukrainian control.
This is reported by the Financial Times.
As is known, on Monday, August 18, Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet at the White House with US President Donald Trump, as well as a number of European leaders — including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The parties are expected to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, continued Western support, and possible ways to end the war.
Zelensky stressed that he is ready to seek realistic paths to peace, but stressed that there will be no concessions to Moscow in the form of the transfer of territories that remain under the control of Ukrainian forces. According to Ukrainian officials, the president seeks to form a “productive settlement process” that would take into account the interests of Ukraine and partners, but would not include “impossible steps,” such as the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Donetsk or Luhansk regions.
At the same time, Kyiv acknowledges that the negotiations will be extremely difficult. The Kremlin insists on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the occupied part of Donbas, while the West is discussing a new format of security guarantees for Ukraine — effectively an analogue of NATO Article 5, but without formal membership in the Alliance.
Political experts say this could be one of the defining moments of Zelensky’s presidency. At stake are not only issues of territorial integrity, but also the future role of the United States and Europe in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security.
The “acceptable compromise” that Zelensky is talking about, according to his advisers, could consist in fixing the current front line as a temporary border to launch peace talks. However, Kyiv categorically rejects the idea of officially recognizing Russian occupation administrations or transferring new Ukrainian territories under Moscow’s control.
On the eve of the meeting, experts warn: the outcome of the negotiations in Washington could determine not only the further course of the war, but also the balance of power in Europe for decades to come.
As is known, on August 18, in Washington, US President Donald Trump will first meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky , and later they will be joined by European leaders and the NATO Secretary General.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a visit to the White House , where he plans to discuss the details of a potential trilateral meeting with Donald Trump.
By the way, European allies plan to support Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to the United States in order to strengthen his position in negotiations with Donald Trump and avoid possible conflicts in the White House.
We would like to remind you that the meeting between Zelensky and Trump will be attended by a number of world leaders , including the President of the European Commission, the Secretary General of NATO, the presidents of France, Germany, and Finland, as well as the prime ministers of Great Britain and Italy.
