Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready to leave his post after the war ends.
He said this in an interview with Axios.
Zelenskyy assured that he has no plans to hold the presidency in peacetime. According to him, he understands that people expect a leader with a new mandate to make the decisions necessary for long-term peace.
“My goal is to end the war, not to continue running for office,” the head of state emphasized.
In addition, the president added that he would ask parliament to hold elections provided that a ceasefire is reached between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
Despite the fact that, in his opinion, the current security situation and the Constitution put the vote at risk, elections are still possible.
“During the ceasefire, I think security may make it possible to hold elections. It is possible,” Zelenskyy summed up.
Previously, the president stated that Ukraine could hold presidential elections if a ceasefire is established.
As reported, the Verkhovna Rada’s consideration of the draft State Budget for 2026 showed that the authorities are “preparing for elections, not for victory.”
