Zelensky responded to Putin’s demand for Russian language
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the state language of Ukraine is and will remain Ukrainian, commenting on information about Russia’s demand to grant official status to Russian as part of a peace agreement.
He stated this during a conversation with journalists, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
“We have a state language – Ukrainian. The Russian Federation can say whatever it wants. I believe that they are doing this purely to set ultimatum conditions and complicate the process,” Zelensky emphasized.
Earlier, several media outlets reported that among Moscow’s proposals, voiced during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, there was allegedly a demand not only for concessions regarding Ukraine’s eastern territories, but also for the Russian language to be granted official status in certain regions or throughout the country.
Recall that during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin put forward a number of demands to end the war against Ukraine. The Kremlin’s proposals exclude a ceasefire until a full peace agreement is reached.
One of the key demands is the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entire territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Russia agrees to freeze the front line in Kherson and Zaporizhia regions and is even ready to return small areas in Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has once again rejected the idea of handing over Donbass territory to the Russians . The Ukrainian president’s position has not changed, as he had stressed before the meeting between Trump and Putin that Ukraine would not consider territorial concessions.
It later became known that US President Donald Trump plans to hold a trilateral meeting on August 22 with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Kremlin Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The American president informed the Ukrainian and European leaders of this during a joint telephone conversation. At the same time, Putin has not yet publicly agreed to attend the meeting with Zelensky.
