On Monday, July 28, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law aimed at enhancing the operations of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).

This is stated on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

The purpose of the law is to strengthen the functional capabilities of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and ensure its readiness to counter current and future threats to national security.

Under the new provisions, SBU personnel will be permitted to use weapons and military equipment while performing official duties.

The law also provides for an increase in the SBU’s staffing: up to 37,000 personnel during peacetime and up to 41,000 during special periods (excluding martial law). Notably, the number of operatives in the Special Operations Center “A” will be expanded to 10,000.

Earlier, on July 16, the Verkhovna Rada passed the bill with 311 votes in favor. The following day, it was submitted to the president for signature.
