Zelenskyy and Trump began talks in New York

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump have begun talks in New York. The meeting is taking place at the UN headquarters on the sidelines of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

At the beginning of the meeting, Trump said that he planned to discuss with Zelensky Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, as they affect the situation in the fuel market.

Zelensky, for his part, expressed hope that the war would be concluded by winter and that Trump would help Ukraine with this.

The US President also stated that there is now an opportunity for an agreement between Ukraine and Russia. According to him, ending the war is in Moscow’s interests.

One of the main topics of the negotiations may be the mutual cessation of attacks on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine and Russia.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump said that Russia had lost some of its oil refining capacity due to the Ukrainian strikes. He noted that many Russian refineries had been hit and were at least temporarily shut down.

The US president had previously called on Zelensky to stop the strikes on Russian refineries, linking them to the situation on the global fuel market. According to Axios, Trump raised the issue several times during a phone call with Zelensky on September 20.

Ukraine, for its part, is ready to discuss ending such strikes, but only on a reciprocal basis. Zelenskyy said that Russia should respond by stopping attacks on Ukrainian energy and critical infrastructure.

It was during a phone conversation on September 20 that Zelensky and Trump agreed to meet in person in New York.

Zelensky arrived in the United States to participate in the UN General Assembly. During the trip, he announced about 20 meetings with representatives of the American government, European leaders, heads of international organizations, representatives of business and think tanks.

The President of Ukraine also announced that the parties have prepared a new Drone Deal for signing. Among the main tasks of the visit, Zelenskyy named the approaching end of the war, strengthening Ukrainian air defense, and discussing specific proposals in the field of security and de-escalation.

Recall that earlier Donald Trump had already called on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian refineries , linking them to problems in the global diesel fuel market.

Before that, Zelensky spoke about the expected meeting with Trump on September 20th and stated that he planned to raise the issue of countering the Russian ballistic threat.

In addition, Trump recently signed a law on sanctions against Russia and Iran , which, in particular, allows for the imposition of tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil and gas.
