Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy summed up his visit to the United States, during which he held talks with President Donald Trump at the White House and met with senators and congressmen at the Capitol. As a result of the talks, the parties agreed to intensify the diplomatic process, continue cooperation in the defense sector, and increase sanctions pressure on Russia.

The results of the negotiations were announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, the White House, and the Head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov.

The Ukrainian delegation included Kyrylo Budanov, Serhiy Kyslytsia, Pavlo Palisa, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga, Head of the Servant of the People faction David Arakhamia, and Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Olha Stefanishyna. The American side was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth, and White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles.

The meeting between Zelensky and Trump lasted about an hour and took place behind closed doors.

US President Donald Trump briefly summarized the results of the negotiations.

“It is a great honor to meet with the President of Ukraine Zelensky. We discussed many issues. The meeting went very well!” he noted.

The White House also positively assessed the negotiations.

“President Trump has concluded his meetings in the Oval Office with President Zelensky and Prime Minister Netanyahu. Both meetings were positive and productive!” White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said.

After the talks at the White House, Volodymyr Zelensky also visited the Capitol, where he met with senators and congressmen. The main topic of conversation was increasing sanctions pressure on Russia and continued support for Ukraine.

Republican Senator Mike Rounds said that the Ukrainian president explained to American lawmakers the main purpose of his visit to the United States.

“The whole point of this trip is to bring Putin to the negotiating table. Zelenskyy believed that Putin would think a little more about trying to negotiate a settlement if sanctions were imposed and actually caused more irritation and, as he put it, anger among the Russian people over the war,” Rounds said.

According to the senators, Zelensky stressed that the new sanctions could help consolidate the successes of the Ukrainian military on the front and force the Kremlin to sit down at the negotiating table. Senator Jim Risch reported that during the meeting, the President of Ukraine and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, stated that the sanctions bill could become no less, and possibly more effective, than military action to end the war.

“Both believed it was at least as effective, perhaps even more effective, in ending this war… This piece of legislation could have a greater effect than anything done on the battlefield,” Risch noted.

Volodymyr Zelensky himself, summing up the negotiations, separately emphasized the development of defense cooperation with the United States. In particular, the parties discussed licensing the production of interceptors for Patriot systems in Ukraine, as well as other defense projects.

“We also talked about diplomacy – it is important to intensify the diplomatic process. Our teams will agree on the details of their further communication. I am grateful to the United States for its strong support,” Zelenskyy said.

Head of the Presidential Office, Kirill Budanov, reported that the parties agreed to intensify negotiations at all levels.

“We had a meaningful conversation about the diplomatic and security steps necessary to bring about a just peace. Together with our American partners, we have a clear understanding of the need for a speedy and just end to the war,” he emphasized.

The visit ended with an agreement to deepen defense cooperation, intensify diplomatic contacts, and coordinate further sanctions steps against Russia.

As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. After the talks, the Ukrainian leader reported that the parties discussed strengthening Ukrainian air defense, joint production of interceptors for Patriot systems, and further diplomatic steps.

As reported, the US Senate has completed work on a bill on new tough sanctions against Russia. The document provides for economic pressure not only on Moscow, but also on countries that continue to buy Russian oil and gas.
