During a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, US President Donald Trump stated that he has no plans to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine at this time.
Axios reports this, citing two informed sources.
They said Trump had made it clear that his top priority was diplomacy, and that handing over the missiles could “detonate that process.”
“Nobody was shouting, but Trump was tough,” one of the people said.
“It got a little emotional at certain points,” another source added.
The meeting, which lasted about two and a half hours, ended abruptly when Trump said, “I think we’re done. We’ll see what happens next week,” referring to planned talks between the US and Russia.
The American leader also told Zelensky about his phone conversation with Vladimir Putin, clarifying that the current US proposal envisions ending the war with a freeze on the front line at current positions.
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy held a conference call with European leaders, during which, according to Axios, several expressed surprise at Trump’s apparent shift in position. Soon after, EU leaders began making coordinated statements in support of Ukraine, signaling that the negotiations in Washington had not yielded the expected results.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer proposed developing a peace plan for Ukraine jointly with the United States, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte initiated an urgent call of European national security advisers over the weekend.
As the publication notes, Zelenskyy’s main goal during the visit was to obtain Trump’s commitment to the Tomahawk and other weapons systems, but the American president did not provide such guarantees.
As a reminder, Trump previously avoided a direct answer to the question of whether Ukraine should cede territory to achieve peace with Russia.
The American leader also stated that India has almost completely stopped purchasing Russian oil and will soon refuse to import it altogether .
