Zelenskyy and Trump’s talks in New York: what is known about the results of the meeting

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about the main results of negotiations with Donald Trump in New York. The parties discussed a possible energy truce with Russia, strengthening Ukrainian air defense, production of Patriot missiles in Ukraine, and further sanctions pressure on Moscow.

Zelenskyy announced this during a conversation with journalists after a meeting with the US president.

One of the main topics was the possible cessation of attacks on the energy sector. Ukraine is ready not to attack Russian energy facilities if Russia, in response, stops attacks on the Ukrainian energy system and critical infrastructure.

According to Zelensky, the US has agreed to pass this proposal on to the Russian side. It is currently unknown what Moscow’s response will be.

At the same time, the president emphasized that there is no question of Ukraine unilaterally refusing to strike. If Russia continues to attack Ukrainian energy, Ukraine will respond.

Separately, Zelensky and Trump talked about strengthening air defense ahead of winter. Ukraine expects to receive additional Patriot missiles as part of the winter air defense package.

Kyiv also wants to be able to produce interceptor missiles for Patriot directly in Ukraine. This requires American licenses.

Zelensky said that his military adviser, Pavlo Palisa, has already held talks with Raytheon. According to the president, the company is ready for cooperation, and Trump responded positively to Ukraine’s request to help speed up the obtaining of licenses.

Launching such production could take about a year and a half. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine will need its own production of Patriot missiles in the future as well.

Another issue was the possibility of new sanctions pressure on Russia. Zelensky said that the US could apply so-called “hell sanctions” if Moscow does not de-escalate.

According to the president, Ukraine is counting on using this tool if Vladimir Putin does not show willingness to change his position and take steps to end the war.

This includes possible new restrictions on Russia’s energy, defense, and “shadow fleet” sectors. It also includes the possibility of imposing tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that continue to buy large amounts of Russian oil and gas or help circumvent sanctions.

Zelensky and Trump also discussed possible steps for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy. The Ukrainian president said that both countries are interested in ending the war before winter.

In addition, Zelensky suggested involving China in diplomatic efforts. In his opinion, the participation of Chinese President Xi Jinping could influence Putin’s position.

Recall that earlier Donald Trump had already called on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian refineries , linking them to problems in the global diesel fuel market.

Before that, Zelensky spoke about the expected meeting with Trump on September 20th and stated that he planned to raise the issue of countering the Russian ballistic threat.

In addition, Trump recently signed a law on sanctions against Russia and Iran , which, in particular, allows for the imposition of tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil and gas.
