Zelenskyy arrives in the US: meeting with Trump will take place at the White House
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington on July 28 for a one-day working visit. The trip’s agenda includes talks with US President Donald Trump, meetings with American officials, and participation in a farewell ceremony for Senator Lindsey Graham.
This was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as Tetyana Kozyreva, a special correspondent for the Public in Washington.
According to the head of state, the main priority during the visit will be strengthening defense cooperation with the United States.
“Already in the United States of America. The schedule includes meetings with President Trump, his team, and those who can support our defense. Priority number one is anti-ballistics and strategic cooperation with America. Peace must become closer,” Zelenskyy said.
The President also emphasized that, together with US representatives and international partners, he will honor the memory of Senator Lindsey Graham, who was one of the most active supporters of Ukraine in the US Senate.
According to journalist Tatyana Kozyreva, the talks between Zelensky and Trump are to take place in the Oval Office behind closed doors. The meeting is expected to last up to two hours, after which the US president will receive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Among the key topics of the negotiations, according to Suspilny, are the development of defense cooperation, the possibility of producing missiles for Patriot systems in Ukraine, as well as the Graham-Blumenthal bill to strengthen sanctions against Russia and states that continue to purchase Russian energy resources.
After the talks at the White House, Zelensky also plans to visit the US Congress, where he will meet with lawmakers working on the sanctions initiative. In addition, the Ukrainian delegation will participate in the farewell ceremony for Lindsey Graham, for whom security measures have already been tightened in Washington.
As a reminder, the US Senate will hold a procedural vote on a bill to strengthen sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, July 28. The document, co-authored by Senator Lindsey Graham, may be put to a final vote as early as next week.
