Pope Leo XIV welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo for a high-level discussion focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine and the urgent need for peace.

According to the Vatican press office, the meeting centered on the search for a just and lasting resolution to the conflict. Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow for the victims of the war and reaffirmed his spiritual solidarity with the Ukrainian people, assuring them of his prayers and unwavering support.

The Pope also voiced strong support for the return of Ukrainian children forcibly taken to Russia and reiterated the Vatican’s willingness to host peace negotiations between representatives of Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

“We sincerely seek peace and an end to this war,” President Zelenskyy told reporters following the meeting. “We are counting on the Vatican and His Holiness to assist in providing a neutral and moral venue where high-level talks can take place.”

He also thanked the Pope and the Vatican for their support, especially on the issue of Ukrainian children taken to Russia during the war.

It is worth recalling that in May 2025, Pope Leo XIV declared that he was ready to hold the next round of talks between Ukraine and the Russian Federation in the Vatican. However, the Kremlin responded that the Vatican was not a suitable place for peace talks due to its “inelegance.”
