President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the details of new negotiations to end the war and named the next steps that the Ukrainian side is preparing together with partners from Europe and the United States.
He stated this during an evening video address.
Zelenskyy reported that Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov is currently in Turkey, where he is holding a series of meetings – first with the country’s Foreign Minister, and then with representatives of Turkish intelligence. The key topic of the talks is the resumption of prisoner exchanges.
“We need this assistance to return our Ukrainians home from Russian captivity. Last year, exchanges were active, but unfortunately, they slowed down towards the end of the year. We need to restore this,” the president noted.
The Head of State added that Umerov maintains daily contact with the American team and European partners. In parallel, Ukraine is preparing new formats of cooperation and important international meetings.
According to Zelensky, a meeting of national security advisers will be held in Ukraine on January 3, dedicated to the topic of peace. This will be the first such meeting on Ukrainian territory. 15 countries, representatives of European institutions and NATO have confirmed their participation. The American side will join online.
A military-level meeting is scheduled for January 5 – the chiefs of general staff will gather. The main topic will be security guarantees for Ukraine.
“Politically, almost everything is ready. It is important to work out every detail – how the guarantees will work in the sky, on the ground, and at sea if we manage to end the war. And this is the key goal,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
The President also announced that negotiations at the level of leaders of European states and the Coalition of the Willing countries are planned for January 6. Ukraine is counting on increased support and greater political certainty regarding security guarantees and a future peace agreement.
As previously reported, the United States stated that on New Year’s Eve, negotiations to end the Russian-Ukrainian war had reached a critical phase.
