Zelenskyy signed the law on education in minority languages: the European Commission confirmed the opening of two negotiation clusters

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed amendments to the law on education that guarantee the right of children from national minorities and indigenous peoples to study in their native language. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos said that on October 13, they plan to open 2 more negotiation clusters on Ukraine’s path to joining the European Union.

This was reported by the press service of the Verkhovna Rada.

The amendments to the law on education were previously approved by the Verkhovna Rada. On October 12, the parliament received a document signed by the president.

The law improves the legislation and guarantees children from national minorities and indigenous peoples of Ukraine, whose languages are official languages of the EU, the right to receive education in their native language alongside the state language.

The adoption of the changes was a condition for Hungary to lift its veto on the opening of 2 negotiation clusters within the framework of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos welcomed the decision of the Ukrainian parliament and stressed the importance of political unity for the continuation of reforms.

“I welcome the unity demonstrated across the political spectrum. This is crucial for reforms to continue. Tomorrow we plan to open 2 more negotiation clusters on Ukraine’s path to the EU. Despite Russia’s relentless attacks on civilians, we are determined to move forward together to prepare Ukraine’s future within our Union,” Kos wrote.

As is known, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted Law No. 16119 on Ensuring the Educational Rights of Indigenous Peoples and National Minorities by 266 votes in total . The document guarantees the opportunity to receive education in their native language along with the state language and should bring Ukraine closer to opening the next negotiation clusters on joining the European Union.
