Zelenskyy updated the rules for presenting the Shevchenko Prize: what you need to know about the innovation

On Saturday, July 26, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy made changes to the rules for presenting the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine.

This is stated in Decree No. 553/2025.

Thus, Zelenskyy increased the number of nominations to 13:

  • prose;
  • poetry;
  • literary and art studies;
  • journalism and public relations;
  • musical art;
  • concert and performing arts;
  • theatrical art;
  • cinematography;
  • visual arts;
  • photographic art;
  • decorative and applied arts;
  • design (according to the types determined by the Committee for the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine);
  • creative curation of cultural and artistic projects.

As noted, the prize is awarded to creators of new works released within the last five years (however, no later than six months before their nomination for the prize).

“And for the National Award in the nomination for creative curation of cultural and artistic projects, the direct author of a cultural and artistic project (work) that has been implemented as a meaningful and holistic cultural phenomenon within the last five years (but no later than six months before its nomination for the National Award) is nominated, provided that this project is the result of the author’s creative work,” the decree explains.

It is also clarified that monographic scientific studies, textbooks, manuals, and catalog albums are not nominated for the Shevchenko Prize.

In addition, in Decree No. 552/2025, the President ordered the Cabinet of Ministers to develop and approve a plan of events for the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine.

In particular, it is planned to hold a ceremony to present the award; hold celebrations on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the award’s establishment; prepare and publish an encyclopedic guide “Shevchenko Laureates: 1962–2026” and an album of works by artists – laureates of the National Award; create exhibition projects; produce and put into circulation a commemorative coin.
