russia has used cluster weapons in Ukraine at least 24 times since war began – UN
The Russian army has used cluster munitions in populated areas at least 24 times since the start of full-scale war in Ukraine.
Michelle Bachelet, head of the UN Human Rights Office, said.
“Reliable reports indicate that russian armed forces have used cluster munitions in populated areas of Ukraine at least two dozen times since the February 24 invasion,” the report said.
According to Bachelet, the entire population of Ukraine has been experiencing real horror for months now. The lives of millions of people have been turned upside down as they are forced to flee their homes or hide in basements and bomb shelters because their cities are being shelled and destroyed.
According to the UN refugee agency, more than four million people have been forced to flee Ukraine to neighbouring countries so far. Of these, 2.3 million are in Poland, 608,000 in Romania and hundreds of thousands more in Moldova, Hungary, russia and Slovakia.
According to UNICEF, more than two million children have left Ukraine.
At the Geneva Forum, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also reported that russian shelling has damaged medical facilities, including 50 hospitals.
Reiterating the UN Secretary-General’s calls for a cessation of hostilities, Bachelet insisted that the Russian leadership “heed the clear and resolute calls of the UN General Assembly and take immediate measures to withdraw its troops from Ukraine”.
