The United States and the European Union have reached an agreement to supply at least 15 billion cubic meters of American liquefied natural gas in 2022. According to the agreement, EU member states must meet the demand for at least 50 billion cubic meters of American gas by 2030. This is expected to significantly reduce the EU’s dependence on Russia’s Gazprom.
The agreement was announced by US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels.
Biden said Russia was using its efforts to supply Europe with oil and gas to manipulate its neighbors, so the United States would help Europe reduce its dependence on Russian oil and gas and provide the continent with sufficient supplies for the next two winters.
“It takes some time to adjust the gas supply chains and infrastructure that have been built over the last decade, so we need to make sure that families in Europe can survive this winter and next as we build infrastructure for a diversified, sustainable and clean energy ащк fort the future. “- said the American president.
At the same time, von der Leyen called the joint energy group a major step in efforts to diversify gas supplies from Russia.
“As Europeans, we want to diversify from Russia to suppliers we trust, who are friends and who are reliable. Therefore, the US commitment to provide the European Union with an additional 15 billion cubic meters of LNG this year is a big step. in this direction, because it will replace the LNG supplies we currently receive from Russia, ”said the President of the European Commission.
In addition, the United States has committed itself to ensuring stable demand and supply of an additional 50 billion cubic meters of American liquefied natural gas by 2030, which, according to von der Leyen, will replace a third of Russian gas supplies to Europe.
