On Friday, October 31, a surge in solar activity is expected – a red-level geomagnetic storm with a K-index of 5. It can affect people’s well-being, cause headaches, fatigue, and blood pressure spikes, as well as cause disruptions in mobile communications and navigation.

This is according to data from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). Experts note that the forecast is updated every three hours, so the level of solar activity can change.

What is a magnetic storm?

A magnetic storm is the Earth’s response to solar flares, which release a stream of charged particles into space. When they reach the Earth’s magnetosphere, a geomagnetic disturbance occurs.

The level of activity is determined by the planetary K-index from 0 to 9:

1–4 — calm level,

5 and above – a red level storm that affects health and equipment.

At values of 7–8, you can even observe the aurora borealis in some regions.

How a magnetic storm affects people

During times of increased solar activity, some people experience:

headache and dizziness;

irritability, insomnia, fatigue;

blood pressure drops;

decreased concentration of attention.

Doctors advise getting more rest on such days, avoiding overwork and stress.

How to make yourself feel better during a storm

Follow a sleep and eating routine.

Reduce your consumption of coffee, alcohol, and salty foods.

Drink more water and herbal teas.

Take easy walks outdoors.

If possible, reduce your workload and rest more.

People with chronic illnesses should keep their medications with them.

A contrast shower in the morning will help, and a warm bath in the evening.
