Attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra: the bishop spoke about the condition of the shrine after the fire

The Russian strike damaged the roof of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, but the damage inside the building was not critical. At the same time, the attack on the shrine once again demonstrated Moscow’s complete disregard for world religious values and international agreements.

This was announced on the air of “Pryamoy” by Metropolitan of Bila Tserkva and spokesman for the Kyiv Metropolis of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Evstratiy (Zorya).

He particularly emphasized the efficiency of rescuers, museum workers, and monks of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, who promptly evacuated historical values and church relics.

“Thank God that the destruction caused by the Russian strike is not as critical inside the cathedral as it was outside, because the rescue services began to respond very quickly, and both the museum workers and the monks of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine began to respond very quickly in order to remove everything that needed to be moved from the inside of the cathedral,” the bishop said.

At the same time, he noted that the situation could have been much worse, drawing a parallel with the tragedy at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, where the entire roof burned down. The main task now is to quickly carry out conservation work on the building’s roof to protect the historical monument from precipitation.

According to Evstratiy, the Russian attack on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra demonstrates Moscow’s complete disregard for world religious values and international agreements. He compared the current attack on the Assumption Cathedral to the actions of Soviet underground members who blew up the same temple in 1941 and blamed it on the German occupation authorities.

“The blow itself can only be assessed as a manifestation of special cynicism. contempt for elementary universal human values, not to mention spiritual, religious values,” the bishop noted.

As a reminder, on the night of June 15, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Kyiv using ballistic missiles and drones. The shelling killed 4 people and injured at least 23 people, including a child.
