Construction of an additional protective barrier has begun on the Polish-Belarusian border, which is intended to strengthen existing fortifications. Construction work has covered five sites simultaneously, where engineering troops have been involved in the installation of complex metal structures.
This is reported by the RMF24 publication.
As the commandant of the Podlaskie Border Guard Department, Sławomir Klekotka, said, the specialists chose the most vulnerable zones, where attempts at illegal entry were most often recorded. “We started with the most vulnerable places for us. We identified them based on the possible border crossings by persons who want to enter our country illegally,” he noted.
It is reported that the new construction involves the installation of a four-meter-high netting near the technical road, equipped with barbed wire. Special attention was paid to the safety of forest fauna, providing a two-meter fence that will protect animals from accidental injuries.
The main goal of the project is to slow down the movement of violators and provide border guards with the opportunity to act proactively directly on Polish territory. Experts expect to fully complete the large-scale investment by the end of spring, which will allow creating a holistic system of protection against illegal entry.
As a reminder, on April 1, self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko declared that the Belarusian Armed Forces were preparing for war . He clarified that his country was supposedly against war, but the army was “designed for that.” Lukashenko threatened to respond to those who were “looking at us with a gun.”
Meanwhile, a new automated entry/exit system (EES) will be operational at the external borders of the Schengen area from April 10. It will change the border control procedure for citizens of non-EU countries, including Ukrainians.
