Bavaria to strengthen protection of critical infrastructure against drones and hybrid attacks: details

Bavaria will become the first German state to urgently pass a law to protect critical infrastructure from new threats. Bavarian Premier Markus Söder stressed the need to strengthen the protection of private businesses against drones and hybrid attacks.

He said that a special police center has already been set up in the city of Erding to combat drones. The next step should be to strengthen the protection of private infrastructure.

Zeder said that in addition to industrial fire departments, factory security services are to appear in the future. Their employees are planned to be allowed to counter drones, just as industrial fire departments are already involved in extinguishing fires.

According to the Bavarian Prime Minister, new types of attacks and increasing incidents of sabotage require expanded capabilities to protect critical infrastructure. This includes facilities of private operators, which are increasingly becoming targets of criminals.

Bavaria also plans to review the legal requirements for the protection of personal data that relate to the security of critical infrastructure. In particular, it concerns:

• sufficiently long-term storage of recordings from video surveillance cameras for further analysis, including with the use of artificial intelligence;
• simplification of requirements for video surveillance of enterprise territories;
• reducing requirements for posting warning signs about video surveillance.

Zeder explained that such changes are necessary in order not to attract the attention of attackers to critically important objects with information about the location of cameras and protected areas.

“Hybrid attacks are becoming increasingly frequent. Therefore, a new approach to assessing the situation is needed, which will allow us to respond consistently and promptly to emerging threats,” said the Prime Minister of Bavaria.

He emphasized that protecting critical infrastructure, including power grids, water supply systems, and defense enterprises, is in the interests of the entire state.

“The rule of law must resolutely oppose this and create the necessary conditions for this. Private operators must be given the opportunity to better protect themselves on their own. Security is the price of freedom,” said Zeder.

As a reminder,Germany officially stated that Russia was responsible for the attempted sabotage at Leipzig/Halle airport . In early August, a drone with explosives was discovered there near a Ukrainian cargo plane.

In addition, two disturbing incidents occurred in Germany overnight: an unidentified object exploded at Augsburg’s main train station, injuring two people, and at a substation near Cologne, police suspected deliberate damage to equipment.

As reported, on the morning of September 2 , an explosion occurred at the Augsburg Central Station in Germany, injuring two Ukrainian citizens — a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy. Later, another suspicious object was found near the main entrance to the station, but it did not explode.
