“Black umbilical cord”: why anti-Russian sanctions do not work without pressure on China

The effectiveness of Western economic restrictions against Russia remains minimal due to the position of China, which effectively holds the aggressor’s financial system. Therefore, until the PRC comes under large-scale secondary restrictions, the Russian Federation will continue to receive resources for war.

The president of the NGO “Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine” Artur Kharitonov, on the air of “Pryamoy”, compared China’s role to a “black hole” that allows the Kremlin to ignore most bans.

“Sanctions have never worked fully because of one word. That word is China. And there’s nothing even to discuss in this story, because China is this black umbilical cord, a black hole from which Russia gets everything it needs and as much as it needs,” the political expert stated.

At the same time, he noted that the strikes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the enemy’s energy infrastructure are tangible, but not decisive. The greatest impact would be attacks on logistics routes and ports that connect Russia with the Chinese market. Ukraine needs means to destroy objects that provide communication between the two autocracies over long distances, – believes Artur Kharitonov.

The day before, Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, said that relations between Russia and China had allegedly reached an “unprecedentedly high level.” Xi Jinping, for his part, stressed that China and Russia should work together on “a more just and equitable system of global governance.”

Meanwhile, during a visit to Beijing, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin failed to secure Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s support for the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline. According to The Washington Post, Moscow had hoped to get Beijing’s consent to implement the project, which could supply up to 50 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to China each year. However, the negotiations did not yield the expected result for the Kremlin.
