Defeats and records: match results and team positions in Groups I and J at the 2026 World Cup

All first-round matches in Groups I and J at the 2026 World Cup have been played. This time, no unexpected results were recorded. However, new records were set.
France striker Kylian Mbappé was the star of the show, scoring twice against Senegal. This brought his tally of goals for the national team to 58, surpassing Olivier Giroud (57) and becoming the sole leader in the history of the French national team.
The striker also brought his World Cup scoring tally to 14 goals, surpassing Just Fontaine’s tally (13 goals).
Mbappé also became the first player in World Cup history to score two or more goals in five different matches.
Overall, the French team defeated Senegal 3-1. In the second match of the same group, Norway predictably crushed Iraq 4-1 and took the lead in Group I , which looks like this after the first round:
In Group J, Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0, while Austria beat Jordan 3-1. Jordan was making its World Cup debut, so its defeat was expected. However, the team’s only goal had already sparked jubilation among its fans.

The next matches of the 2029 World Cup will take place today, June 17. Portugal and Congo will play in Group K , and England and Croatia will play in Group L.
