Despite the ceasefire, Russia attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles and drones: how the air defense worked

On the night of May 9, the Russians attacked Ukraine with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 43 attack drones, despite a previously announced “truce.” Air defense forces managed to shoot down most of the enemy UAVs.

This was reported by the press service of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“On the night of May 9 (from 6:00 p.m. on May 8), the enemy attacked with an Iskander-M ballistic missile from Crimea and 43 Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas attack UAVs and Parodia simulator drones from the directions: Kursk, Orel, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Millerovo – Russia,” the post says.

It is noted that the air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

According to preliminary data, as of 08:00, air defenses shot down/suppressed 34 enemy Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas UAVs, and Parody simulator drones in the south, north, and east of the country.

At the same time, a missile and 9 strike UAVs were recorded at 6 locations, as well as the fall of downed aircraft (fragments) at 2 locations, the department added.

Recall, Russia declared a so-called ceasefire on May 8 and 9 , but at the same time threatened to strike the center of Kyiv in case of attempts to disrupt the parade in Moscow. In addition, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that the civilian population of Kyiv and employees of foreign diplomatic missions should leave the city in advance in case of “attempts to disrupt the parade.”

Subsequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decreeauthorizing the May 9 parade on Red Square in Moscow as part of the announced three-day truce between Ukraine and Russia. For the duration of the parade, the Red Square area will be excluded from the plan for the use of Ukrainian weapons.

In addition, US President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, the cessation of hostilities will last on May 9, 10 and 11.
