The Romanian Foreign Ministry said NATO may invoke Article 4 on consultations with allies following the drone crash in Romania.

This was reported by Digi24, citing a statement by Minister Oana Tsoi.

On social media, she wrote that the Russian ambassador was urgently summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Romania’s security is our absolute priority. We have confirmation from MAPN that the drone that crashed into a residential building in Galaca is of Russian origin,” notes Tsoiu.

She also noted that the decision was made following a highly serious incident and that an official announcement would be made regarding the consequences for diplomatic relations between the countries and further steps at the European level regarding sanctions against Russia.

Answering a question about the possible application of Article 4 of the NATO Treaty, the Minister noted that this is an instrument that Romania can use.

“Last night’s incident falls into the category of incidents that justify the use of such instruments. We’re talking about consultations between allied states when an allied state believes there’s a risk. Clearly, invoking Article 4 is a shared decision. It’s part of a discussion of the options we currently have,” she comments.

When asked whether a CSAT meeting would be convened regarding the drone incident and whether she had spoken with President Nikusor Dan about such a meeting, Oana Tsoi said discussions were ongoing.

“Of course, we are holding these discussions with the President of Romania and the Prime Minister. The President is expected to make the necessary announcements later today. Therefore, convening the CSAT and announcing it to the general public is the President’s prerogative. Both the Minister of Defense and I are in constant contact with both the President and the Prime Minister. These briefings are ongoing,” Oana Tsoiu said.

In particular, she added that the Russian Ambassador to Bucharest was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday as Romania’s response to statements made by the Russian Federation regarding missions present on Ukrainian territory.

Asked whether the Russian ambassador would be summoned today following the drone incident, Tsoi replied, “We will return within the day with answers at the diplomatic level.”

Earlier, “Pryamoy” reported that a Russian drone crashed into a residential high-rise building in the Romanian city of Galati on May 29. The impact caused a fire, and two people were injured.

NATO also condemned the crash of a Russian drone on a residential high-rise building in Romania and called Russia’s actions irresponsible.
