Germany strengthens defense against Russian sabotage and cyberattacks: details

Germany plans to strengthen protection of critical infrastructure against Russian hybrid threats, including sabotage and cyberattacks. The country’s Interior Ministry is preparing the deployment of new special forces and a national cyber defense system.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced the creation of new special forces units in Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich. The decision was made after a series of incidents at energy facilities and a drone sabotage at Leipzig airport.

The new units will be deployed in strategically important cities in the country. Particular attention is planned to be paid to protecting the airspace over major transport hubs and the government quarter in Berlin from enemy drones.

German defense and energy companies are also planning to be officially allowed to neutralize drones on a par with law enforcement.

In parallel, the country plans to deploy a national “cyber dome” to protect digital networks from hacker attacks.

“Russia’s hybrid attacks using drones with explosives on airports, agents in our cities, cyberattacks on our networks, and sabotage against our infrastructure are an everyday reality. These attacks will intensify, but we can fight back and protect ourselves,” Alexander Dobrindt emphasized.

As a reminder,Germany officially stated that Russia was responsible for the attempted sabotage at Leipzig/Halle airport . In early August, a drone with explosives was discovered there near a Ukrainian cargo plane.

In addition, two disturbing incidents occurred in Germany overnight: an unidentified object exploded at Augsburg’s main train station, injuring two people, and at a substation near Cologne, police suspected deliberate damage to equipment.

As reported, on the morning of September 2 , an explosion occurred at the Augsburg Central Station in Germany, injuring two Ukrainian citizens — a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy. Later, another suspicious object was found near the main entrance to the station, but it did not explode.
