Ground operation in Iran is doomed to failure: will it stop Trump?

The possibility of a ground operation in the Middle East is a hot topic of discussion among American officials. US President Donald Trump’s plan for a ground invasion of Iran faces serious obstacles due to Tehran’s military power and lack of sufficient leverage to exert pressure.
Igor Chalenko, head of the Igor Chalenko Center for Analysis and Strategies, said this on the air of “Pryamoye”, commenting on the US intentions to seize the Iranian island of Kharq to stop oil exports.
According to him, the real prospects of such a campaign remain doubtful. Moreover, the situation is complicated by the fact that Iran has switched to asymmetric methods of struggle, involving more and more regional players in the confrontation.
“The ground component can really only have some short-term success within the framework of capturing the islands. Why short-term? Because there are suicide bombers with cluster munitions,” Chalenko noted.
He emphasizes that any large-scale campaign on the mainland will face a million-strong army and a huge enemy reserve. The capture of territories where the main oil exports are concentrated will bring only a temporary advantage, the political scientist is convinced.
“Any mainland campaign will fail, because Iran really has an army of under a million – this includes their regular military, this includes the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – ed.), and there are 10 million reserves. Accordingly, no matter what the United States provides there, it will not be possible to quickly go through all this without sufficient preparation,” the studio guest explains.
In addition, the use of cheap but effective drones against the American military poses significant risks to Trump’s domestic political rating, since each loss of a soldier will be perceived extremely painfully, – added Igor Chalenko.
Recall that the media reported mass cases of American soldiers refusing to participate in a possible ground war , which became a serious challenge for the US administration. Moreover, ignoring intelligence data and the lack of preparation of society are driving the situation into a dead end.
Meanwhile, the confrontation in the Middle East demonstrates the gap between the official statements of individual US politicians and the actual actions of the Israeli army. While Donald Trump reports on the imminent victory, Israel is implementing a strategy of gradual destruction of the top of the Iranian regime. “ This is a cocktail of Brezhnev, Chernovetsky and Chernomyrdin . That is, what he broadcasts, it absolutely does not coincide with reality,” – says diplomat Dmitry Chekalkin ironically.
