Damage Reported at Zaporizhzhia NPP: IAEA Sounds the Alarm

IAEA experts have documented damage at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant following reports of a drone attack. Despite the incident, the agency says radiation levels at Europe’s largest nuclear facility remain within normal limits.

During a morning inspection of the area, the agency’s mission recorded damage to the turbine housing’s exterior. According to the station’s representatives, the facility had been attacked by a drone the day before. During the inspection, experts also found a damaged metal hatch, debris, and burnt remains of an optical cable near the building.
The IAEA said it had asked the plant’s occupation administration to grant access to the interior of the turbine housing, located next to unit six, to conduct additional inspections and assess the consequences of the incident.
In addition, while working at the facility, mission members were forced to temporarily take cover due to the sounds of drones and gunfire near the station.
The measurements confirmed that the radiation background on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP remains within normal limits.
“Yesterday’s strike was a serious incident that jeopardized key principles of nuclear security. Attacks on nuclear facilities are unacceptable and must stop to prevent the very real risk of a nuclear accident that would benefit no one,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
The day before, the Defense Forces of Southern Ukraine denied the Russian side’s statements about an alleged strike by the Ukrainian military on power unit No. 6 of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The department stated that the information disseminated by occupation resources is another information provocation by Russia.
It was previously reported that a drone attacked the external radiation monitoring laboratory at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is located outside the plant’s perimeter.
