A drone sighting near Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands has temporarily closed one of its main runways, posing a serious threat to flight safety.

This is reported by Nos .

The Polderbaan strip was closed to flights for about 45 minutes. According to law enforcement, the first reports came in at around 12:10 from pilots and air spotters who noticed the drone at an altitude of about 150 meters. The captain of the Transavia plane told air traffic controllers that the drone had flown only 50 meters from his side.

Several units and a police helicopter were involved in the search for the drone, but the drone and its operator could not be found. A Marechaussee representative suggested that this was probably the work of an amateur, as the aircraft was no longer recorded after the initial signals.

At the same time, law enforcement officials stressed that the shutdown of the runway due to a drone is “a fairly unique case.” Due to the incident, planes were redirected from Polderbaan to Zwanenburgbaan for three quarters of an hour. The runway was reopened around 1:00 p.m.

It is not yet known which drone caused the incident. According to preliminary estimates, it was a small device. We remind you that drone flights over the territory and near Schiphol are strictly prohibited due to the danger to civil aviation.

Since the beginning of the year, at least 22 cases of suspicious drone flights near airports have been recorded in the Netherlands. Last week, similar incidents led to the temporary closure of several airports in Denmark, as well as Oslo Airport. There, the government even qualified such flights as an “attack” and “bombardment” of critical infrastructure.

It was previously reported that flights of unidentified drones were recorded in Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania, Norway, and Finland, some of which flew near military facilities and strategic infrastructure.

By the way, on Friday, September 26, several unidentified drones were spotted over the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany . Schleswig-Holstein borders Denmark, where drones have been spotted three times this week. Local authorities have launched an official investigation into the incident.

It should be noted that earlier, operations at Aalborg Airport in North Jutland were temporarily suspended after unidentified drones appeared in its airspace.

On the night of September 23 , Gardermoen International Airport in the capital of Norway was forced to temporarily suspend operations after unidentified drones were spotted in the airspace above the airport.
