Iranian forces have attacked a Thai container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, damaging its cargo and sending smoke aboard, raising the risk of disruptions to global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

This is reported by Iran Insight .

The published videos show a burning container ship with the words SAFESEA blurred out. The exact location of the incident and the authenticity of the footage have not yet been confirmed.

According to the IRGC, the Strait of Hormuz is effectively closed to “unfriendly” vessels, including those affiliated with US allies and Israel. The IRGC has previously warned of a tough response to unauthorized attempts to transit the strait.

The incident was one of a series of attacks on ships in the region in recent weeks. In early March, damage was reported to the Thai bulk carrier Mayuree Naree and other vessels, disrupting shipping.

The Strait of Hormuz is strategically important for global oil and LNG supplies, and even partial disruptions affect energy prices.

The blockade has already caused oil prices to rise. Experts estimate that if the disruption continues, Brent could rise above $100 per barrel, and in some scenarios, to the range of $95–110 per barrel.

“Any movement in the strait will be met with a tough response,” the IRGC press service stressed. Infographics on social media show that three ships that were supposed to pass through the strait were deployed near the islands of Qeshm and Lark.

Analysts warn that a prolonged blockade could create persistently high oil prices and supply problems. Short-term restrictions typically cause a sharp jump in prices with a partial pullback after de-escalation.

It was previously reported that Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf , a key route for oil supplies from the Middle East. The movement of oil tankers in the strait has been effectively halted, and ships have reduced their speed to zero.

As is known, in his first statement, the new leader of Iran emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed . According to him, this is pressure on Israel and the United States.

As a reminder, French President Emmanuel Macron announced an upcoming mission to gradually restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time , Europe wants to open the Strait of Hormuz , creating an analogue of the “grain corridor” in Ukraine.
