Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, a key route for oil supplies from the Middle East. Oil tanker traffic in the strait has been effectively halted and ships have been slowed to zero.

This is reported by Reuters .

According to journalists, a number of major oil companies have suspended the transportation of crude oil and fuel through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil consumption passes.

“Our vessels will remain in place for several days,” a statement from a manager at a major oil trader said.

Journalists also report that some European states have recommended that tankers under their flags temporarily refrain from passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The EU naval mission Eunavfor Aspides said that attacks on oil vessels cannot be ruled out following the strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, as of 2026, approximately 20-30% of the total volume of oil consumed in the world every day passes through the strait.

Experts emphasize that even a partial disruption to shipping could sharply raise oil prices – a possible jump to $95–110 per barrel .

According to maritime services, at the time of the escalation, more than 750 merchant ships were in the strait area, which significantly increases the risk to global trade.

Recall that on February 28, Israel launched preemptive strikes on Iran, and also attacked Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon . A state of emergency was declared throughout the country.

It later emerged that the strikes on Iran were a joint operation between Israel and the United States . After that, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States had launched a military campaign in Iran .

At the same time, Saudi Arabia strongly condemned Iran’s aggression against the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan and declared its readiness to “provide all its capabilities to support them in all measures they take.”
