The United States is increasingly reconsidering its approach to relations with Israel, which is no longer seen as an exclusive ally within the framework of an “America First” policy. According to American and Israeli interlocutors, this indicates a shift in Washington’s foreign policy priorities.
This is reported by Politico .
According to journalists, after the joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran in late February, the Israeli leadership expected a further strengthening of the strategic partnership with the United States. At the same time, a few months later, Jerusalem began to prepare for a scenario in which the country would increasingly be left without the unconditional support of Washington.
According to the newspaper’s sources, US Vice President J.D. Vance only reflects the new approach of the American administration, in which Israel no longer has a “special” or privileged status among US allies. According to one of the Israeli political advisers, the country’s government mistakenly calculated that President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy would provide an exception for Israel.
Journalists cite the reduction in contacts between the leaderships of the two states as confirmation of the cooling of relations. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington five times in 2025, after his visit in February 2026, no new meetings have been scheduled at the White House, and telephone contacts have become less regular.
During a press conference, J.D. Vance said that Israel should reflect on its actions towards its only remaining influential ally.
“Donald Trump is the only head of state in the world who is currently sympathetic to Israel. If I were a member of the Israeli government, I would think twice before speaking out against the only powerful ally I have left,” said J.D. Vance.
The Vice President also emphasized that the United States has made a significant contribution to Israel’s security, and warned against underestimating Washington’s role.
“Anyone in Israel who thinks the biggest problem for the country is the president of the United States needs to wake up and face reality,” Vance added.
At the same time, the White House assured that relations between the United States and Israel remain strong, and President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have a common position on supporting Israel.
Recall that on February 28, Israel carried out preemptive strikes on Iran, and also attacked Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon . A state of emergency was declared throughout the country. It is noted that the strikes on Iran are a joint operation between Israel and the United States . After that, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States had launched a military campaign in Iran .
