Legalization of short-barreled guns: are Ukrainians ready for the right to self-defense?

The experience of a million military personnel proves the high responsibility of society in handling firearms. Permission should be obtained by individuals without mental disorders and a criminal record.

Politician and former military serviceman Volodymyr Omelyan spoke on the air of “Pryamoy” in favor of granting Ukrainians the right to purchase and own pistols for self-defense.

“I believed and believe that there should be an opportunity for Ukrainian citizens to buy a short barrel, and that is what is being discussed now,” the studio guest noted.

He emphasized that in addition to the right to purchase, the state must clearly regulate the rules for the use of such weapons. Omelyan cited examples of police officers or civilians finding themselves on trial after neutralizing criminals in their own homes. Therefore, without a comprehensive legal approach, a person’s life can be ruined by lengthy legal proceedings due to the lack of legislative certainty.

Currently, any weapon other than automatic weapons can be freely found in specialized stores, so the issue of short-barreled weapons is the main subject of the current discussion, Volodymyr Omelyan added.

At the same time, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the “Kyiv Security Forum”, once again emphasized that he is against the legalization of short-barreled weapons for the population.

The official believes that owning a weapon “only creates the illusion of protection” and can lead to an increase in incidents, such as the one that happened the other day in Kyiv .
