Lithuania prepares to evacuate residents of border areas in case of war with Russia

Lithuanian border municipalities have reported difficulties evacuating their populations in the event of a military threat from Russia. The main problems include a lack of transportation, possible road blockages, and the evacuation of people with special needs.

The municipality of Shalchininkai, which borders Belarus, announced that an evacuation plan has been approved and routes have been agreed with the military commandant’s office. Due to the possible blockage of the main road, alternative routes will have to be used.
Municipality representative Pavelas Gojus noted that the available transport will not be enough to evacuate all residents in 1 day. According to him, if the evacuation takes 2-3 days, the municipality will be able to carry it out.
In the Varensky district, the main problem was the evacuation of people with special needs, in particular bedridden patients, for whose transportation ambulances are needed.
In the Yurbark district, which borders the Kaliningrad region of Russia, in the event of a mass evacuation, they plan to evacuate about 5-5.7 thousand people. For additional transport and transportation of up to 130 patients, the municipality will contact the central authorities.
Lithuania’s evacuation readiness is currently being tested during the national exercise “Vyčio skliautas 2026”. The practical part involves simulating the evacuation of residents of several districts and municipalities.
As a reminder, on the night of Tuesday, September 15, NATO fighters destroyed a drone that violated Lithuanian airspace . The drone entered the country’s territory from the side of Belarus.
As previously reported, Russia may use its drone flights over Moldova and NATO countries to test their air defenses and respond to border violations. A particular threat is posed by jet drones, which leave Ukraine’s neighboring countries with significantly less time to react.
