A round of talks between Ukraine, the United States and Russia on ending the war has concluded in the United Arab Emirates. Despite a three-hour closed-door format, where buffer zones and control mechanisms were the main topics, there was no breakthrough.

Former ambassador to the US and France Oleg Shamshur noted on “Pryamoy” that this diplomatic process so far resembles movement on the spot without real results.

“Russia’s position is absolutely clear. Talks will and can only take place on Russian terms. And I think it was the same in Abu Dhabi,” the diplomat believes.

According to him, Moscow continues to act from a position of strength, combining negotiations with massive shelling of Ukrainian cities. The parameters of the end of the conflict, mentioned by President Volodymyr Zelensky, remain a subject of discussion, but the aggressor’s lack of readiness to make concessions makes any conclusions premature, so the situation looks like an attempt to squeeze out the maximum, ignoring the interests of the other side, – explains Shamshur.

In his opinion, US President Donald Trump continues to adhere to a strategy based on respect for the Kremlin’s power, rather than on the desire to punish the aggressor.

Analyzing the American politician’s latest statements, Oleg Shamshur noted that Trump still calls the Russian dictator strong and achieving his goals, which calls into question the possibility of introducing tough restrictions in the near future.

“Trump is clearly not willing to take any measures to force Putin to at least accept the conditions currently set out in these 20 points,” the diplomat emphasizes.

According to the studio guest, Russia’s tactics of destroying energy are designed to force Ukraine to agree to surrender. Trump, in turn, expresses surprise at the endurance of Ukrainians in difficult conditions, but does not offer effective tools to influence Moscow.

His approach has remained unchanged for many months, which does not contribute to achieving a just peace, – summed up former Ambassador to the US Oleg Shamshur.

The trilateral negotiations involving delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, which took place on January 23-24 in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, concluded the day before. Following the meeting, the parties agreed to continue the negotiation process.

According to sources, during the negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine, the United States and Russia in Abu Dhabi, the parties achieved greater progress on the military block of issues. At the same time, no agreements were reached on the territorial aspects .

The next round of trilateral talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia will take place in Abu Dhabi on February 1. The parties will continue discussions after previous meetings, which the American side called productive.
