Peace talks: why meetings in the US are not yielding results

The process of preparing for negotiations with Russia currently demonstrates serious internal problems and the lack of a unified position between Ukraine and the United States. Numerous rounds of informal consultations in Florida with the participation of US representatives have not brought the desired understanding.

This was reported on the air of “Pryamoy” by Vadym Chernysh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Center for Security Studies “SENSS”.

In particular, he drew attention to the fact that the Ukrainian side has still not been able to convince its American partners to fully support its own position, which jeopardizes the effectiveness of future meetings.

“All these meetings end with us not finding an understanding even with the American side. And this, it seems to me, is the unsuccessful work of, as the president says, the negotiating team,” Chernysh noted.

At the same time, the guest was particularly critical of the publicity of the President of Ukraine regarding strategic disagreements with allies. He noted that disclosing the details of disputes with American and French partners seems illogical against the background of statements by US representatives about progress.

The lack of detailed tasks for unofficial delegations and the unclear status of negotiators only deepen the crisis of trust, so without creating a solid foundation in relations with Washington, it is becoming increasingly difficult to count on successful pressure on the Kremlin or effective sanctions, – Vadym Chernysh summarized.

As a reminder, Finnish President Alexander Stubb reported that the trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US and Russia have effectively reached a deadlock . According to him, after three rounds of talks in the winter, there are currently no signs of further progress. One of the reasons may be the aggravation of the situation in the Middle East, in particular the war in Iran, which is distracting international attention.

Earlier, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, said that trilateral talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia are currently suspended . Despite this pause, Ukraine and Russia continue to cooperate on humanitarian issues – in particular, on the exchange of prisoners of war and the bodies of the dead.
