Poland and Belarus exchanged prisoners in a five-for-five exchange on April 28. Among those released from a Belarusian prison is journalist Andrzej Poczobut, who spent five years behind bars for criticizing the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

US President Donald Trump’s special representative for Belarus, John Cole, said that the American team helped free three Polish citizens and two Moldovan citizens.

According to him, Poland, Moldova, and Romania played an important role in this work.

“We thank Poland, Moldova, and Romania for their invaluable support in these efforts, as well as for President Alexander Lukashenko’s willingness to engage constructively with the United States,” Cole said.

One of the most famous released was Andrzej Poczobut – a journalist, activist and representative of the Polish community in Belarus.

He was detained after criticizing the Belarusian authorities, and the case caused significant resonance in Poland and caused diplomatic tension between Warsaw and Minsk.

Pochobut spent five years in a Belarusian prison.
