European Union countries are considering 5 scenarios of action in the event of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s victory in the elections. The reason is the risk of further blocking decisions on Ukraine.

This is reported by Politico .

According to diplomats, the EU is discussing response options that should reduce the possibility of blocking decisions by individual countries.

Among the main scenarios:

  • changing the voting system to a qualified majority instead of unanimity;
  • creating a model of “multi-speed Europe”, where individual groups of countries will make decisions without all members;
  • increasing financial pressure due to limited access to EU funds;
  • deprivation of voting rights under Article 7 of the EU Treaties;
  • consideration of the possibility of excluding Hungary from the EU.

The first option involves changing the principles of decision-making in the field of foreign policy and the budget, which will avoid blockage, but will mean significant changes in the functioning of the EU.

The second scenario involves the formation of coalitions of states that will be able to promote decisions without the participation of all members of the union, which could affect the unity of the EU.

The third option is to increase financial pressure on Hungary in case of violation of the principles of the rule of law.

“Respect for the rule of law is essential for access to EU funds,” said European Commissioner Michael McGrath.

The fourth scenario involves the possibility of depriving a country of its voting rights, but this requires the support of other member states.

The fifth option — Hungary’s exclusion from the EU — is called by diplomats the most radical and unlikely, since such a mechanism is actually not provided for by the current treaties.

The EU is expressing concern over the actions of Viktor Orban, who has repeatedly blocked decisions on support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

By the way, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was booed during a speech in the city of Győr, which is traditionally considered a stronghold of his Fidesz party.

Ukraine recently agreed to the European Union’s offer of financial and technical assistance for the restoration of the Druzhba oil pipeline.

Previously, some European countries and the European Commission asked Ukraine to provide access to the damaged section of the oil pipeline, but were allegedly refused.

As is known, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced a possible interruption of electricity supplies to Ukraine if oil transit through the Druzhba oil pipeline is not resumed .
