Reading the Signals: Europe Interprets Moscow’s ‘Window of Opportunity’

European politicians and defense officials fear that Russia could use the next 1-2 years to escalate the conflict outside Ukraine. Some European officials believe that the Kremlin may try to test NATO’s readiness to respond to new threats.
This is reported by Politico.
Journalists note that Europe is concerned about a possible “window of opportunity” for Russia amid Donald Trump’s presidency in the US and the unfinished rearmament of European Union countries.
Mika Aaltola, a member of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said that Russia could take advantage of the weakening of transatlantic ties.
“Something could happen very soon — there is a Russian window of opportunity,” said Mika Aaltola.
Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that Russian President Vladimir Putin may try to avoid unprofitable negotiations on Ukraine by escalating the conflict.
“Putin may escalate the conflict towards another neighbor, trying to avoid humiliating negotiations with Ukraine,” said Gabrielius Landsbergis.
According to Politico’s sources, NATO does not rule out provocations or limited operations by Russia against individual Alliance countries. At the same time, some officials consider a full-scale attack unlikely due to Russia’s significant losses in the war against Ukraine.
Mika Aaltola suggested that possible Russian actions could take various forms, including operations in the Baltic Sea or the Arctic or the use of drones.
“Escalation of the conflict in other regions could give Russia a new card to play. The war is draining their resources, so they are looking for a way out,” said Mika Aaltola.
The article also notes that some European politicians are calling for not exaggerating the level of threat. Estonian President Alar Karis said that Russia is currently focused on the war in Ukraine.
“I don’t think Russia has enough capabilities to wage war against the Baltics,” said Alar Karis.
At the same time, European officials emphasize that NATO countries must continue to strengthen defense capabilities and increase investments in the security sector.
It was previously reported that the Russian Federation is moving from open threats to specific subversive actions on the territory of European states. At the same time, European Union countries have faced serious problems in preparing their territories for a possible defense.
The Russian Defense Ministry recently published a list of companies located in Europe that allegedly produce and supply drones to Ukraine. Such a move, the ministry’s press service claims, will lead to an escalation of the military-political situation on the European continent and to the transformation of these countries into Ukraine’s strategic rear.
Recall that the Kremlin is actively forming the psychological and informational basis for a possible future war against NATO. At the same time, Russia is creating a network of “Trojan horses,” buying up real estate near military bases of NATO countries, to launch a coordinated sabotage campaign. The Kremlin has also intensified its propaganda campaign regarding the creation of the “Narva People’s Republic,” which may indicate that the Kremlin is preparing to attack Estonia.
