Rare earths again: why Trump needs control over Greenland

The US interest in Greenland is driven by its desire to gain an advantage in the technological war with China. The island is also strategically important due to its rare earth deposits and geographical location.

This opinion was expressed on the air of “Pryamoy” by political strategist Oleksiy Golobutsky.

According to him, it is for these rare earth resources that the main struggle will unfold in the coming decades, because Beijing has been monopolizing the mineral market for a long time, which allows it to blackmail other states.

In addition to economic factors, Greenland is important for control over the Arctic basin. The United States, as a powerful maritime power, seeks to secure the most favorable conditions in this region. Golobutsky suggests that behind Trump’s aggressive rhetoric is the goal of gaining territory or preferences for the American fleet and business.

“The next decade will be a struggle for rare earth metals in order to compete with China in this technological struggle. China has very wisely monopolized many minerals over the last decade,” noted Golobutsky.

The personal ambitions of the US president also play a role in this game. According to the political strategist, Trump aspires to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and is ready to take extraordinary steps for this. Control over the strategic resources of the Arctic is part of a large task that is being carried out by the people behind him, – emphasizes Oleksiy Golobutsky.

As a reminder, the European Union has suspended the ratification process of a trade agreement with the United States amid statements by US President Donald Trump about the seizure of Greenland.

Meanwhile, the EU is considering imposing tariffs on €93 billion worth of US goods in response to Donald Trump’s threats to NATO allies over Greenland. It is also discussing restricting access to the EU market for US companies as a tool of pressure ahead of key negotiations.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on imports from eight European countries over their stance on Greenland. The tariffs will remain in effect until a deal is reached to fully purchase the island, and will rise to 25% on June 1.
