The issue of Ukraine’s possible refusal to join NATO in exchange for promised security guarantees has become a subject of heated debate. However, such a scenario is unacceptable for Ukraine, as it does not comply with the current Constitution, which clearly defines the country’s Euro-Atlantic course.
This was stated on the air of “Pryamoy” by Volodymyr Ariev, a people’s deputy from “European Solidarity”.
He expressed a strong position on news agency reports about a possible refusal to join NATO in exchange for security guarantees from allies.
The People’s Deputy emphasizes that the President, as the guarantor of the Constitution, cannot freely dispose of it, since the Basic Law clearly establishes the country’s course towards the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance.
“If the president really abandons the course from NATO written in the constitution, then Ukraine must immediately abandon such a president, because a person who despises the constitution cannot lead the state,” the People’s Deputy noted.
He believes that only a postponement of consideration of the issue of accession, and not a complete refusal, in exchange for “reinforced concrete guarantees” can be a subject of discussion, while any changes to the Constitution require 300 votes, which is impossible during martial law.
The representative of “European Solidarity” also criticized the previously signed security agreements, calling them a “PR, formal step” that in essence does not oblige anyone. Volodymyr Ariev noted that if now the need for guarantees is again being discussed, this indicates the ineffectiveness of previous agreements.
In addition, according to the MP, Ukraine needs to receive reliable security guarantees that would become part of the legislation of partner countries, citing as an example the experience of Taiwan, whose security is enshrined in the legislation of the United States, which obliges the US to provide defense assistance. It is this level of guarantees, and not just assurances, that Ukraine needs, – Ar’ev emphasized.
The United States, Ukraine, and key European countries made significant progress in intensive talks on ending the war, security guarantees, and the future of Ukraine’s recovery on Tuesday. The American side calls the talks “very positive” and the package of security guarantees the strongest ever proposed.
It later emerged that Ukraine and the United States were planning a new round of talks to prepare for a potential peace agreement. The consultations will involve working groups and military experts who will analyze maps. The talks could take place as early as this weekend in Miami, USA.
At the same time, during preliminary consultations with the American authorities, Ukraine agreed to a compromise step regarding the prospects of joining NATO within the framework of discussing the peace plan of US President Donald Trump. According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s strategic goal remains NATO membership as the most reliable guarantee of security, but this direction has not received support from some partners in the US and Europe.
