Russia is testing a new attack drone “Geran-5”: what kind of weapon is this?

Russian troops have begun using a new unmanned aerial vehicle, the Geran-5, at the front, which has structural similarities to Iranian developments.

Co-chair of the public initiative “Right Cause” Dmytro Snegirev noted on the air of “Pryamoy” that this drone is currently undergoing testing and is not yet being mass-produced, despite statements about increasing the pace of production.

“The main constructive surprise is that it can be equipped with the R-73 missile. This is an air-to-air missile just at the moment of possible counteraction to Ukrainian aviation. This is a rather serious challenge for Ukrainian aviation,” the military-political analyst said.

According to intelligence, the drone is six meters long and has a wingspan of over five meters. The weight of the warhead reaches 90 kilograms, and the flight range allows it to hit targets at a distance of up to 1,000 kilometers. The occupiers have adapted the device for launch from aircraft, which should make its use cheaper and increase its range.

Snegirev emphasizes that in December, the use of more than 5,000 drones was recorded, which refutes rumors about scaling production to a thousand units per day. The technological features of the “Gerani-5” indicate the borrowing of Iranian solutions, in particular the Karrar model.

Recall that in early 2026, during combined air attacks against Ukraine, the Russian troops first used the new Geran-5 strike drone . Unlike previous modifications of the Geran series, the device is built according to a normal aerodynamic scheme. At the same time, a significant part of the key components and components is unified with other drones of this line.
