In Russia, foreign intelligence officers have suggested staging an assassination attempt on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the eve of the election. This scenario was intended to influence the course of the campaign and mobilize voter support.

This is reported by The Washington Post .

According to journalists, the proposal was contained in an internal document of the Russian foreign intelligence service, which was obtained by one of the European intelligence agencies. The material discussed the so-called “Gamechanger” strategy, which envisaged a radical change in the course of the election campaign.

The document noted that the staged assassination attempt was intended to shift voters’ attention from socio-economic problems to issues of security and stability of the political system.

“Such an incident will change the perception of the campaign from a rational plane to an emotional one,” the Russian operatives’ report states.

Journalists note that there have been no real attacks on Viktor Orban, but the very appearance of such a proposal indicates the importance of the elections for Moscow. According to sources, the Hungarian prime minister’s popularity has declined against the backdrop of economic problems.

The article also indicates that the Russian side could have considered other tools of influence, including information campaigns. In particular, narratives about Orbán as a guarantor of stability and security were promoted.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed questions about the document.

“This is another example of disinformation,” he said.

At the same time, the Russian foreign intelligence service itself refused to comment.

By the way, the leader of the Hungarian opposition party “Tisa” Peter Magyar stated about possible Russian interference in the upcoming elections in Hungary . According to him, Russian military intelligence agents have been arriving in Budapest for several weeks.

It was previously reported that Russia had sent a group of specialists to Budapest for possible interference in the parliamentary elections in Hungary and support for the government of Viktor Orban.

As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the opinion that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban may be defeated in the upcoming parliamentary elections , after which Kyiv and Budapest will have the opportunity to restore full-fledged relations.
