Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he would step down in the coming weeks and called for early presidential and parliamentary elections. His announcement came amid ongoing anti-government protests in the country.

This is reported by Reuters .

Aleksandar Vučić made a corresponding statement on June 27 during a pro-government rally in Belgrade.

“I will be president for only a few weeks, and then I will resign,” Vucic said.

At the same time, he announced the holding of early presidential and parliamentary elections.

Vučić’s second and final presidential term was due to end in mid-2027 . He has been President of Serbia since 2017, having previously served as the country’s Prime Minister. The Serbian Progressive Party, which he represents, has been Serbia’s leading political force for many years.

The president’s statement came amid prolonged protests that have become one of the biggest challenges to his government in recent years.

Mass protests began after the tragedy in Novi Sad, where a concrete structure collapsed at the railway station in November 2024. As a result, 16 people died.

Initially, protesters demanded punishment for those responsible for the tragedy, but later the actions grew into a broader anti-government movement. Demonstrators accuse the authorities of corruption, improper control over infrastructure projects, pressure on the media and abuse of power. The Serbian authorities reject these accusations.

One of the main driving forces of the protest movement was students, who demanded early elections, a transparent investigation into the tragedy in Novi Sad, and political accountability of officials.

Recall that in May, large-scale protests and clashes between demonstrators and police took place in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The participants of the action demanded the resignation of President Aleksandar Vučić and the holding of early national elections.
