US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in Geneva that the deadline set by President Donald Trump for Ukraine to adopt a peace plan could change. The talks discussed the progress of the 28-point peace plan and further steps to engage Russia.
This is reported by CNN .
Rubio stressed that the deadline of Thursday for agreeing on a peace plan is flexible, adding that it is important to complete the process as quickly as possible to prevent further loss of life.
“We want to meet the deadline as soon as possible. Of course, we would like to meet it by Thursday. We have made a lot of progress, so I am optimistic that we will achieve a result in a very reasonable time frame, very soon,” Rubio said.
He clarified that regardless of the specific day, it is important to conclude the negotiations quickly, because people’s lives are at stake.
“Whether it’s Thursday, Friday, Wednesday or Monday next week, we want it to happen soon because people are dying,” he added.
Rubio stressed that the peace plan continues to evolve with input from all sides, calling it a “living document” that receives new input every day.
“It’s a living, breathing document. Every day, with input, it changes,” Rubio said.
The Secretary of State added that Russia has not yet participated in the negotiations, but will be involved at the next stage.
“Obviously, we have to take what we have received — if we can reach an agreement with the Ukrainian side — and present it to the Russian side,” he explained.
Rubio also reported that President Trump is pleased with the progress of the negotiations and positively assesses Ukraine’s involvement in discussing key points of the 28-point plan.
“Today was a very productive day — the most productive of our entire effort,” Rubio said.
He stressed that despite significant progress, there are still several points that need to be worked on. A final decision requires the signatures of US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Russia’s consent.
“I don’t want to declare victory or the finale here. There’s still work to be done, but we’ve made significant progress today compared to when we started the day,” Rubio said.
The day before yesterday, it became known that the first session of negotiations between the Ukrainian and American delegations ended in Geneva , during which the parties noted progress in working on joint peace proposals. Representatives of Ukraine and the United States stated that the process will continue and will be supplemented by new agreed provisions.
By the way, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and member of the Ukrainian delegation at the peace talks Rustem Umerov stated that the agreement on the peace document with the United States is in the final stage . According to him, the document already contains the main Ukrainian priorities.
As is known, on Sunday, November 23, negotiations between the US, Ukraine, and the EU regarding Donald Trump’s new “peace plan” will be held in Geneva (Switzerland). The purpose of the meeting is to agree on wording for the upcoming meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and the US.
A group of Western leaders released a joint statement on the initial draft of the US peace plan for Ukraine on Tuesday. They stressed that the document could serve as a basis for work, but needed to be refined.
Earlier, key provisions of the draft US “peace plan” , allegedly agreed upon by representatives of Donald Trump and the Kremlin, became known. The document contains 28 points relating to the security, territories, economy and political future of Ukraine.
